Czech Republic is no newcomer in the world of Tennis, with various professional tennis tournaments taking place in the country off and on, many of which are part of the Association Of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. They also produce some very good tennis players.

This tournament has been played since 1994 and hence has a bit of a legacy. This year will be the 21st edition of the tournament, thus making it a fairly old tournament. Hence, it would have a fair bit of competition resulting in a great tournament overall.

All the players in this tournament are in the top 100 and come from various countries in the world. The highest ranked player is Tommy Robredo of Spain who is Number 19th in the world rankings. Also returning this year as defending champion is the host country’s own Radek Stepanek.

The tournament will be contested by those who either did not qualify for the French Open or have bowed out early from that premier tennis tournament earlier this week.

The top seed is world number 47 and Spaniard Albert Montanes who will be joined by fellow Spaniards and second and third seeds Albert Ramos and Roberto Baustista-Agut. While Montanes managed to make it to the second round at the French Open before going down to David Ferrer, Ramos had a poor tournament as he lost his opener against Jerzy Janowicz.

Third seeded Baustista-Agut also did not make it beyond the second round at the French Open after beating Gilles Muller in the first round.

Seeded fourth at the Czech Open 2013 Prostejov Challenger is Paolo Lorenzi who is currently on a four-match losing streak after losing in first rounds at Rome, Nice and the French Open.

Sunday was the qualifying, both rounds of it, and the qualification finals was held on Monday, deciding who would be playing in the tournament. The first singles and doubles round began later Monday afternoon with Calleri and Belluci in court one, while other first round singles included Granollers versus Hrbaty, Martin and Golubev, and Navarro and Crivoi. Doubles matches on Monday had the following lineup: Massu and Calleri against Martin and Cerratani and Levinski and Zelenay playing Cuevas and Hrbaty.

Day two began unluckily for hometown favorite Radek Stepanek, after he had to scratch out against Pablo Cuevos after coming down hard and injuring his ankle. He was returning a swerve and his ankle twisted beneath him, making it swell up and putting him out of the match. The list of players was supposed to number 32 going into the next round, but with Stepanek seemingly out and Igor Andreyev not able to obtain a visa in time, the list is seriously lacking.

Tomas Berdych had a score to settle with Belluci because of the beating he received at his hands last year, but may now be presented with the task and added pressure of favorite with both Andreyev and Stepanek both out of the picture. Berdych barely beat Olivier Rochus in the first round, and now will face Belluci – two difficult matches in two days.
