The defending champion is the Belgian Ruben Bemelmans who will not try to defend his title. Somewhat interestingly, the tournament has been dominated by Belgian players so far. This year's tourney will be the sixth edition in the event's history, and out of the five competitions so far, three were won by a Belgian. This pattern could theoretically continue but none of the five Belgians will be seeded this time. The top seeded player will be the American Rajeev Ram, followed by his compatriot Taylor Fritz, the Tunisian Malek Jaziri, fourth seeded American Richard Krajicek, fifth seed Tatsuma Ito from Japan, his fellow countryman Yoshihito Nishioka, Alejandro Gonzalez from Colombia and last but not least, Aussie John-Patrick Smith.

The main favorites will be Ram and Fritz, and it would not be a surprise if the veteran American would end playing against the teenager Fritz, who would probably be the favorite to win the match. If not these two, one of the Japanese players could certainly find their way into the final.

The total prize money of the event is €100,000 which makes it one of the most prestigious and lucrative tournaments on the Challenger tour. This year s event will be the fifth edition of the Open de Guadeloupe and if the previous ones are any indication, we could end up welcoming a new winner for the fifth straight time. Because of the relatively high prize money, the tourney has seen its fair share of top 100 (past, current or future) players including but not limited to two-time ATP titlist David Goffin, two-time ATP finalist Benoit Paire and current top 40 Steve Johnson who is the reigning champion of the event. Interestingly enough, the past four finals involved 8 different players from five different countries.

From that standpoint (along with the prize money) the tourney is almost like a mini-ATP event which makes it even more understandable how the organizers are capable of attracting so many relatively big names each and every year.
