This week's tournament is the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and it will play from April 18th to the 24th in Barcelona, Spain. This clay court tournament offers a purse of €1,550,000 and it has a singles draw of 56 and a doubles draw of 24. The venue is the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, the oldest Spanish tennis club in the world. This is the 59th edition of the Barcelona Open and this is an APT World Tour 500 level tournament played on clay courts and is also known as the Trofeo Conde de Godo, one of the most important tennis events in all of Spain.
Rafael Nadal returns to Barcelona to defend the title he won in 2010, which was the fifth straight title for the number one ranked tennis player. The second seed is Robin Soderling, who has won three titles so far this year. David Ferrer is the third seed, and Jurgen Melzer is fourth. Fifth and sixth seeds are Gael Monfils and Nicolas Almagro and then the last two in the top eight are Richard Gasquet and Alexandr Dolgopolov. The tournament takes place at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, which is actually the oldest club in Spain. The tournament itself is having its 58th edition This ATP World Tour 500 event is one of the most well attended tennis tournaments in Spain and is the one of the social highlights of the year. Rafael Nadal is the defending champion and the world number three will hope to take the tournament again. If he does it it will be his sixth title in the row and fans will be waiting to see if this top seed will sail through to the final.
Robin Soderling is the second seed and although he has historically not done well in this tournament, never having made it past the second round, will nonetheless be looking for a victory this time around. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is the third seed and Fernando Gonzales is the fourth, reaching the quarters in 2004 and last year reached the semi-finals. Rafael Nadal is right on track to win his fifth straight Barcelona Open Title. He moved into the Semi-Finals easily after David Nalbandian pulled out of the tournament with a hip injury and after beating Nicolas Almagro 6-3,6-4.
Nadal is now waiting for the results of the matches on between Radek Stepanek and Nikolay Davydenko on Friday, April 24th. Czech Republic's Stepanek won over Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland, while Nikolay Davydenko beat 16th seed Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
Nalbandian's hip injury and Nadal's victory of 6-2 6-0 over Christophe Rochus from Belgium assured Nadal's advancement to the semi-finals.
The ATP Barcelona goes all day Friday, starting at 10:00 and continues Saturday 11:30 to 19:30. You can also catch Sunday's tennis action with your membership from 13:30 – 18:00.
The first round saw Daniel Gimeno-Traver beating Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-3 while Oscar Hernandez from Spain crushed Argentine Eduardo Schwank 6-2, 6-4. Ecuador's own Nicolas Lapentti won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu and another exciting match teamed Arnaud Clement from France with Argentine Guillermo Canas, with Clement coming out on top 7-6 (7-0), 6-3. The final first round action showed Russian native Mikhail Youzhny's victory over Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
