The defending champion is the Japanese Kei Nishikori who although will compete this year, will almost certainly not have an easy time defending his title. The reason for that is Rafael Nadal. After winning Monte Carlo just a day ago, the Spaniard will surely be at his current best which although not as good as in previous years, on this surface could still be enough against just about anybody else with the possible exception of Novak Djokovic. Nadal will be the top seed, followed by world number six Nishikori, world number eight David Ferrer, world number 10 Richard Gasquet, world number 17 Roberto Bautista Agut, world number 22 Benoit Paire, world number 23 Feliciano Lopez, world number 24 Viktor Troicki and several other top 30 players. The main favorite is of course Nadal, but if he cannot get to the final, Nishikori and Ferrer certainly could.

The Japanese is an especially dangerous hitter regardless of the surface. He usually plays his best during hard court tournaments but has several clay titles as well, including last year's Barcelona title which could give him extra motivation.

The total prize money for this year will be €1,993,230 which makes the event one of the more lucrative ATP 500 Tournaments on the ATP Tour. When we take a look at the past winners, we have to realize that the event has been dominated by Spanish players. This is of course not surprising if we take two facts into account. The first is the most obvious, the event is held in Spain, which means that home players are always top priority for the organizers. They get the wild cards and they also receive the cheer from the crowd which always adds a little something to their level of play.
